The famous Kashi Vishwanath temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is a 'Lingam' - which is the fundamental symbol of Shiva - which goes by the time of epic times. This temple of Varanasi is mentioned in the form of the residence of Shiva in Kashdind by Skin Purana. It has caught many attacks by Muslim rulers. The present temple was reconstructed by Rani Ahilya Bai Holkar, ruler of Indore, in 1776. After this, in 1835, the Sikh ruler of Lahore, Maharaja Ranjit Singh, gave it 15.56 meters high layer of gold. Since then it is also known as Golden Temple.
